The Sacred 1,008-Step Climb
The traditional way to reach the temple is by climbing the ancient foot path — 1,008 steps carved into the hillside. This act of devotion is considered highly meritorious, especially when done barefoot.
1
Start Point: Foot of the Hill
The steps begin at the foot of Chamundi Hill on Chamundi Hill Road. Parking is available at the base.
2
Midpoint: Nandi Statue
At step ~400, you'll encounter the giant 5-metre Nandi Bull carved in 1659. A popular rest stop.
3
Summit: Temple Entrance
The path ends at the temple complex entrance. Footwear can be worn on the steps but must be removed at the temple gate.
ℹThe climb takes 45–70 minutes at a moderate pace. Water, coconuts, and flower stalls are available at intervals. The path is illuminated at night.
